Saluki ran through the street, bookbag bouncing on her back, dodging passing merchants with carts and other pedestrians, making a few people stop with a gasp as she nearly ran into them, but manuevered out of the way just in time. Her rather long blonde hair was secured in a ponytail, a few braids being woven into it, and she wore a strange combination of lost desert style sandals and "tunic" top, along with Neopian-style shorts.
"Saluki, dear, wait up!" called her father, an extremely tall and thin gelert, his coat a light tan color, round glasses perched on his long snout. The woman next to him laughed, "Ah, let her go. She's quite a runner." she said, eying her daughter's form, quite ahead of them, fondly.
Saluki's mother was rather short, and a bit chubby, but with her white fur, and blonde hair, it was clear this was where the daughter got most of her looks from, although she had inherited the "tall" gene from her father, and even only at this young age was showing promise to grow into that. Both parents were dressed in matching khaki's - they were renowned archaologists.
"Bye mom! Bye dad! See you after school!" The child chirped from the door of the school building, having already reached it and waved enthusiastically from the window. Her parents exchanged an exasperated look, but then waved back and soon were lost in the crowd.

Trei walked through the crowded halls without talking, one hand on her tiny pink backpack strap. The thoughts of everyone around her jammed into her brain, and even when she covered her ears with her hands it still didn't work. She could barely hear herself think over everyone else.
I hope my mommy packed me a baloney sandwich... Ugh, there's Lia. I hate her. Can't she just move away? Who's the new girl? Look at that freak covering her ears. What is she, anyway?
It was annoying. The thoughts had started trickling into her head two months ago. Her owner had just moved her and her two sisters here to the Lost Desert a week ago. They always moved around. She made her way into her class, standing awkwardly by the door, trying to hide into the shadows. The bell rang and everyone was in their seats. Trei eyed a colorful girl in the front row.

Saluki sat in the front row, indeed being colorful- for though her shirt was of Lost Desert style, it was also violently tie-dyed. She stared raptly up at the blackboard for several seconds, amber eyes wide, then turned around, eyeing a group of girls happily chattering in the back of the room. Her smile faded a tad bit, but instantly became very large and radient upon seeing the strange new pet.
Almost creepy as a matter of fact, if you didn't know her intent was merely friendliness.
Moving incredibly fast, the gelert was soon out of her chair and quite near to the newcomer. "You're new, aren't you? I'm Saluki!" she asked brightly, holding out a hand stiffly with sudden solemnity, and frowned slightly when she didn't shake it right away.
She cocked her head suddenly. "Are you a kacheek? Or..." she started, looking interested.

((I know, isn't it? ^^ First grade wooo XDD))
Trei hardly knew the girl was coming up to her; she'd acted so spontaneously. Saluki's thoughts bashed into her head like a really crowded freeway with thoughts as vehicles moving at eight hundred miles per hour. She reluctantly took the hand of the gelert whose thoughts were hurting her head, shook it once, and then let go. The teacher came and shooed Saluki to her seat. Trei didn't answer Saluki's question.
"Class, we have a new student," the teacher, Mrs. Aree Rambore, a ruki, age 44, wife and mother of three children. Information on this woman came bursting into Trei's head, but they were quickly drowned out by the thoughts and whispers of the children around her. "Her name is Tahtrei. Say hello."

((Yus, lol :B))
Saluki made an excited noise, shook the girl's hand vigorously, then rushed to her desk as she was beckoned, sitting on one foot and allowing the other to dangle. She paused to brush a few pesky strands of hair out of her face.
"HI TAHTREI!" she said, jumping up in her chair, the loudest of the entire class by far, who had merely murmered the greeting without any enthusiasm. She then waved excitedly to her.

"That's enough, Saluki, sit down," the teacher said. She smiled at Trei. "Would you like to say hello?"
"Hi," she murmured.
What a freak! What's with the big ears? That Saluki is just way too weird.
"Hey," said Trei loudly to the girl that insulted Saluki. "That was not very nice."
The girl blinked in astonishment and everyone looked at her, then Trei, then her again. It was only then that Trei realized the girl had been thinking, not speaking aloud. She shrank back in fear.

The gelert reluctantly sat back down, then turning to regard Trei, along with everyone else, not sure what was going on.
The rest of the class was looking from the girl to Trei, unsure of what had happened, as Mrs. Rambore hovered between getting them focused on their studies and being curious aswell.
"You're right. That wasn't nice." said Saluki firmly, seeming quite loud in the shocked silence, not sure at all what was going on, but wanting to defend her new friend.

The class blinked in confusion. Mrs. Rambore pointed to the empty seat next to Saluki. Trei wondered why at the two=people tables everyone sat next to someone else except Saluki, but the answer was apparent just by the insulting thoughts. Trei got a bit scared as she sat down, trying to ignore the snickers behind her. Was Saluki some kind of weirdo? It was only first grade and already these girls were at a mean level.

((lul Saluki has no friends xDDD))
Saluki, actually, was silent as Trei sat beside her, only flashing her a huge smile and turning quickly to regard the teacher.
"Now, class." said Mrs. Rambore, choosing to ignore the strange event that just happened, "Let's get on learning shall we? Now where where we? Reading?"
A groan reverberated across the classroom, as the unwilling students pulled out their workbooks.

Trei sat quietly as she read the letters in her book clearly and without a problem. Everyone else was reading out loud, the same story, to the teacher, but Trei read it silently and finished in a quarter of the time. She looked up from the story and stared out the window, convieniently right next to her seat. She tried her best to tune out everyone's voices and thoughts.
"Tahtrei?"
The teacher's voice broke through her stupor. She looked back at her. "Hmm?" she asked.
"Why aren't you reading?" Mrs. Rambore inquired. "I finished," she admitted. Murmurs flew about the room. Trei ignored their even louder thoughts. "Quiet, class," the teacher commanded. They silenced. To Trei she said, "You finished? Already and in your head?" Her tone was disbelieving.
Trei nodded. "Yes. I'm done."

Saluki blinked at her, looking down at her own workbook, which was at the roughly the same page as everyone else. Her mouth formed an "O" of surprise as she looked curiously at Trei, thoughts running along with everyone else, tho her's had a distinct.. brand.. to them.
Whoa, how'd she do that? LOOK AT THAT SUNBEAM!!! I want a popsicle... A blue one. Or maybe a purple one. Wow, her skirt is really bright. What makes the sky blue? Where's my pencil... IF FISH FLEW- But how'd she (grapes) finish it?

((XDDDDD))
The train of thoughts coming out of Saluki were really confusing and random. Trei could hardly understand them.
"Would you, perhaps, like to read aloud to the class?" asked Mrs. Rambore.
Trei shrugged and flipped back ten pages. It was ridiculous. Ten pages of pictures taking up 75% of each and 25% of words in rather big lettering. She sighed inwardly and began to read out loud. She read the whole story at a logical pace, paused at commas and periods, pronounced everything perfectly, and never missed a word. When she finished, the teacher was in just as much shock as the rest of the class.
"My family likes to read," she offered. "A lot." And being the youngest of three readers, one was likely to catch on fast.

Saluki blinked several times, looking rather bug eyed, along with the rest of the class. And then she began to clap. Surprisingly, a few of the other students joined in, and pretty soon, all of them were clapping, even the teacher, who still looked shocked.
Mrs. Rambore opened her mouth to say something, but just then, the bell, a clankity old thing in the hall, rang. "Don't forget to finish the next page of your workbooks." she managed to say before tottering to her desk.
"Trei, So what class do you have next?" Saluki asked the xweetok, rounding on her automatically.

"Science," she mumbled. This school was weird. Didn't elementary school students generally have one class and one teacher? She had been extremely embarrassed back in there. So she'd learned how to read at age three. That wasn't exactly something to go nuts over. And this Gelert was starting to get on her nerves. She wasn't looking at her so she couldn't tell if she was talking or thinking, but it was rather annoying and finally she exploded, "SHUT UP!!!" Heads turned every way toward the seething fire Xweetok.
